Cellulose Insulation FAQs

What exactly is cellulose insulation?

Dense paper fiber (mostly post-consumer recycled newsprint) treated with borate for fire, mold, and pest resistance. It blows into attics as loose-fill or dense-packs into wall cavities. R-value is roughly R-3.7 per inch — about the same as fiberglass — but the way it fills cavities, including around wires and odd framing, is far better.

Cellulose vs. fiberglass — which should I pick?

For attic top-ups they're close, but cellulose hits its rated R-value in cold weather better (fiberglass loses performance below 20°F if poorly installed), fills gaps tighter, and reduces sound transfer noticeably. For existing wall cavities, dense-pack cellulose is the clear winner — it's the only loose-fill that resists settling.

Will cellulose burn?

No. Borate treatment makes treated cellulose a Class A fire-resistant material — it actually delays flame spread through a wall assembly. It's been used in homes for 70+ years for exactly this reason.

Can you dense-pack the walls of my existing house without tearing them open?

Yes — that's its superpower. We bore small access holes from the exterior or interior, dense-pack each cavity to about 3.5 lb/ft³ so it never settles, and patch the holes. Best retrofit option for plaster or drywall walls without a gut renovation.

Is cellulose actually eco-friendly?

It's the lowest-embodied-carbon insulation we install. ~85% recycled content, manufactured close to point of use, and it sequesters the carbon in the paper itself. Most jobs qualify for the same LPEA, Colorado HEAR, and federal 25C rebates as any other insulation upgrade.
